TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Andrey Rublev takes on Ricardas Berankis in the second round on Thursday, January 20th, 2022.
Will Ricardas Berankis find another level as he aims to cause one of the biggest upsets early on? Will Andrey Rublev use his huge serve and forehand to dominate yet another opponent? Both players will come out here knowing that they can win the match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the third round of the 2022 Australian Open. Who will it be?
Ricardas Berankis came through an extremely tough opening round encounter, beating the always tough Roberto Carballes Baena in 5 sets. The match was so tight that Ricardas only won 4 more points than Roberto. Ricardas had a bit of an advantage in that match just because he had actually played a few matches in these conditions, such as at the Melbourne Open. However, Roberto was still able to keep things tight. Ricardas will be able to build some momentum from that win, but he will also know that its only going to be a tougher battle ahead at the 2022 Australian Open, especially as he now meets Andrey Rublev.
Andrey Rublev came out in strong fashion in his opening round match, getting into his rhythm quite quickly in his first singles match of the year. Rublev beat Gianluca Mager in straight sets and he was very solid on both his first and second serve all throughout the match. Andrey’s real weakness in his game is the power behind his backhand. In 2022, he will be hoping to find some extra percentages on that backhand, and if he does, he will definitely continue rising in the tennis world. However, he needs to now focus on the task at hand in beating Ricardas Berankis at the 2022 Australian Open.
Andrey Rublev and Ricardas Berankis have met 2 times before, with the head to head tied at 1-1. They have not met since 2019, and since then, Andrey has skyrocketed in the world of tennis. Ricardas is definitely an experienced player who has played well to start the year off. However, even with Andrey Rublev only having played 1 match this year, he is still in better form than Berankis. I expect for Rublev to take advantage of the kick serve and his forehand in these fast conditions, with Ricardas not having many shots in his arsenal which can hurt the Russian at the 2022 Australian Open.
