Australian Open 2022: Diego Schwartzman vs. Filip Krajinovic Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Diego Schwartzman takes on Filip Krajinovic in the first round on Tuesday, January 18th, 2022.

Diego Schwartzman will count himself as the unlucky seed at the Australian Open as he drew a tough first-rounder in Filip Krajinovic. Can the Argentine avoid elimination? Or will the 29-year-old Krajinovic win his first round at the Australian Open for the fourth straight year?

Diego Schwartzman produced a strong showing at the ATP Cup, notching up one of his best wins when he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas. But he failed to inspire Argentina’s qualification out of the group as they finished behind Poland when he lost to Hubert Hurkacz. He has not lost a first round at the Australian Open since 2016 when he was forced to retire in the fourth set against John Millman. Granted he is at his best on clay courts, his baseline game is well-suited to these slick courts at Melbourne Park. Which is why he has made the second week at the year’s first Grand Slam on two occasions.

Filip Krajinovic, for his part, will look to win his opening match at the Australian Open for the fourth year running. Krajinovic, being unseeded, was a name many of the top 32 seeded players wanted to avoid given his never-say-die attitude on the court. He pushed Daniil Medvedev last year in the third round, eventually losing in five sets. His 2022 campaign, like Diego Schwartzman, began at the ATP Cup. In the absence of Novak Djokovic, he was tasked to give his country a head start. Although he did when he defeated Viktor Durasovic of Norway, Serbia’s team effort did not withstand the challenges of Spain and Chile.

Diego Schwartzman will play Filip Krajinovic for the first time. The World No. 13 enters Tuesday’s match at the Australian Open as the heavy favorite. The bookies have probably read too much into that Tsitsipas win. And truth be told the Greek is not operating at 100%. Both players are well matched in terms of style, but when it comes to fitness levels, the Argentine shades it. Krajinovic’s injury troubles are documented, but if he plays injury-free, he could seriously trouble Schwartzman. I’m going with an upset in this one.
