TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Hubert Hurkacz (10) meets Egor Gerasimov in the First Round on Monday January 17th, 2022.
Tenth seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland will face the unseeded Belarusian Egor Gerasimov in the First Round of the 2022 Australian Open. Hurkacz enjoyed a breakout season in 2021 and entered the top 10 for the first time. He will be aiming to build on that success with a strong showing here at the first Grand Slam of the year, can Gerasimov stop him with the upset?
Hubert Hurkacz is ranked #10 in the world and is the tenth seed here at the 2022 Australian Open. The Polish star always had potential, but fully broke out last season, winning his first ATP-1000 event in Miami and breaking into the top 10 in the ATP rankings for the first time. His powerful baseline game and huge serve will make him a formidable opponent on this surface, and he is tipped to make a deep run here in Sydney. His First Round opponent Egor Gerasimov is solid but unspectacular and Hurkacz enters this match as the big favorite after leading Poland to the Semi-Finals at the ATP Cup.
Egor Gerasimov is unseeded here at the 2022 Australian Open and is ranked #106 on the ATP Tour. The Belarusian is a veteran of the tour, and has had a solid career thus far. He reached the Quarter-Finals of the first event in Adelaide and the Third Round of the second, after coming through the Qualifiers. That good form will have given him confidence ahead of the Australian Open and he has had more match practice than most leading up the the event. However, he has been handed a very tough draw against top 10 player Hubert Hurkacz, and enters this match as the massive underdog.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Hubert Hurkacz leading the head to head 1-0. The Pole won their only match last season in straight sets at the US Open, and I expect a similar result here at the 2022 Australian Open. He is simply a much better player than his opponent Egor Gerasimov, and should be able to dominate him without many issues. Hurkacz is a dark horse candidate for the title here in Sydney, and he should breeze through to the Second Round in straight sets.
