Australian Open 2022: Novak Djokovic vs. Miomir Kecmanovic Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Novak Djokovic takes on Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round on Monday, January 17th, 2022.

Will Miomir Kecmanovic shock us all and get a huge upset win against his fellow Serbian at one of the biggest tournaments of the year? Will Novak Djokovic be ready to go after an incredibly long legal battle to get himself into the country? Both players know each other quite well and it is somewhat of a mentor relationship, but only one will make the round of 64 at the 2022 Australian Open. Who will it be?

Miomir Kecmanovic has started the year off in alright fashion, going 1-1 in his matches in preparation for the 2022 Australian Open, beating Stefano Travaglia and then losing to Aslan Karatsev at the Sydney Open. Miomir was projected to be a very tough player to beat back in 2019, but in the last two years he has not really hit the mark in terms of progress on the ATP Tour. Miomir has all the necessary aspects in his game to succeed, but he lacks consistency and mentality at times, which leads to many unforced errors. Now, Miomir will need to ensure he is ready to play at his best from start to finish if he is to stand any chance to even win a set against Novak Djokovic.

Novak Djokovic will be extremely relieved to be playing at the 2022 Australian Open, after having flown into the country a week and a half ago which led to his detention and a court case regarding whether they should cancel his visa. On Monday the 10th of January, Novak was granted access to entry and he headed straight away to the court to practice after being detained in a low quality hotel. What will be interesting here is whether the Australian crowd present at his match against Miomir Kecmanovic will be shouting at him negatively, or whether it will be somewhat tamed. Novak can either take that two ways, if it gets to be way too much, it can potentially hurt him and his focus, but on the other hand, it can sometimes make him focus even more and fight like the champion he is and how he has done most of his career.

Novak Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic have met 1 time before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 1-0. They met last year at the Serbia Open where Novak dominated the match from start to finish. Although Miomir has probably learnt a lot from Novak through practicing with him at times throughout his career, even if he comes out at his best, he is nowhere near the level required to compete with a Novak at 80% of his best. Novak will come out at the 2022 Australian Open with a lot of determination to dominate and shut the crowd up. I expect for him to do this very easily against Miomir, and make sure he is ready to continue doing so throughout the tournament.
