Ilya Ivashka cruised through his Round of 32 match against the Australian Jordan Thompson, beating him in straight sets 6-4/6-4/6-4. Ilya Ivashka has really had a very good and lucky draw as he was expected to meet many tough opponents such as Nishikori or Ruud, but earlier upsets prevented him from meeting them, therefore giving him a stronger chance to make it so far here. Now that Ivashka is in the second week of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, he meets his toughest opponent so far in Matteo Berrettini, and he will have to be much better than he has been all tournament if he is to cause the huge upset.
Matteo Berrettini also cruised through his Round of 32 match against Aljaz Bedene, winning in straight sets with the exact same scoreline as his opponent, 6-4/6-4/6-4. Matteo Berrettini has definitely improved his game throughout the tournament and he is cementing himself as a potential top dog in this side of the draw, and none of us would be shocked if somehow he made it to the Final. Matteo has always played well on grass but this year he has improved drastically and is still improving. Matteo will know he needs to be at his best in order to ensure Ilya Ivashka does not cause the upset and does not make him waste too much time on court.
Matteo Berrettini and Ilya Ivashka have met 1 time before, with Matteo Berrettini leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2017 and Matteo won in straight sets 6-4/6-4. Since then, both players have improved and have shown that they are good players on the ATP Tour, but Matteo is just on another level. Ilya Ivashka can definitely push Matteo in some tight sets, and potentially steal one along the way, but Matteo is just too in form on grass at the moment to lose this match. Matteo will win and make his way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
