TennisSection previews the 2022 Sydney Open as Aslan Karatsev takes on Lorenzo Sonego in the quarterfinals on Thursday, January 13th, 2021.
Will Aslan Karatsev get the win? Will Lorenzo Sonego pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight matchup with two newcomers of 2021 coming to a clash. Who will move on to the semifinals at the 2022 Sydney Open?
Aslan Karatsev looked a little rusty as he scored his opening win to set up this meeting with Lorenzo Sonego. He played pretty well for the most part, but the scoreline was tight having won only 7-5 6-4. He will have to raise his level to earn a comfortable win against Sonego, who came through easily. Karatsev still seemed to be playing a relatively undisciplined game, simply hitting his shots and aiming to hit winners instead of forming a concrete point like most players on the ATP Tour. Let’s see if Karatsev can get his act together to take on the Italian and progress to the semifinals here at the 2022 Sydney Open.
Lorenzo Sonego got an easy win against Baez to set up a much tougher meeting against Aslan Karatsev. Sonego has the game that can beat Karatsev, since he is able to play aggressively without risking too much, allowing him to stay in the rallies and draw Karatsev’s unforced errors out, while also being able to take a few risks. I think the main factor in this matchup will be the serving from both guys. Their points in between will be split up pretty evenly, so it depends on who can get more free points. Karatsev is definitely a better returner, so if Sonego doesn’t serve better than him, he might be in trouble as he aims to clash for a place in the last four at the 2022 Sydney Open.
Aslan Karatsev and Lorenzo Sonego have met once before, with Aslan Karatsev leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came last year in Dubai, with Karatsev winning it in 3 sets. Dubai is a very fast court, somewhat similar conditions to what this match will be, and their last match proved that Sonego can most certainly keep up with Karatsev, especially considering the form he was in that tournament having gone on to win it. If Karatsev is able to stay steady on his return and dig into some return games, which I do expect him to do as it was something he did well in his first match, then I think he will come through this tight matchup as he aims to book himself a spot in the semifinals at the 2022 Sydney Open.
