TennisSection previews the 2022 Sydney Open as Andy Murray takes on David Goffin in the quarterfinals on Thursday, January 13th, 2021.
Will David Goffin get a good win against a tough opponent under his belt as he aims to get a redemption season started in 2022? Will Andy Murray continue to improve on his game so that he can play his best tennis right in time for the Australian Open next week? Both players are experienced and can win this when they are playing at their best, but only one will make their way to the semi finals of the 2022 Sydney Open. Who will it be?
David Goffin has not had many tough opponents this week, having faced Facundo Bagnis and Denis Kudla. Goffin has struggled a lot with his form over the last year or so, losing in shocking fashion in the early rounds of most tournaments. In 2022, David will know that he cannot afford to have back to back years like this, and he is definitely working harder to ensure he is at his best on court. However, with the lack of tough opponents over the last year, David will need to get used to tougher balls and rallies fast as he now meets Andy Murray at the 2022 Sydney Open.
Andy Murray doubled his head to head lead against Nikoloz Basilashvili by beating the No.2 seed and securing his spot in the 2022 Sydney Open quarterfinals. It was a very tight match, with Andy having the chance to win the first set but failing, and then doing the same in the second but then was able to win the second in the tiebreak. Andy is improving week over week and its great to see that we are basically forgetting that he is playing with a metal hip. The Brit will be very excited of the chance to make it far here in Sydney, knowing that a title under his belt to start 2022 off would be great. However, he will also be wary of pushing his body too far, and what impact that might have next week at the Australian Open. Will he be at his best against David Goffin?
Andy Murray and David Goffin have met 6 times before, with Andy Murray leading the head to head 6-0. Looking at their head to head, spanning from 2014-2018, it is shocking that David Goffin never managed to take even one set off of Andy in any match. David Goffin is a great player and has had a great career, but the form which he has shown over the last year or so is nowhere near the level required to compete with a determined Andy Murray. I expect that David will struggle in this match because of his lack of tough opponents this week as well. Andy, on the other hand, should be determined to get a solid win under his belt to make sure his body does not need to recover too much here at the 2022 Sydney Open.
