Alejandro Davidovich Fokina made some waves a couple of weeks ago, making the final of the Monte-Carlo Masters, losing out to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Davidovich Fokina has moved up into the top 30, playing some incredible tennis especially on the clay. I think with the way he plays he’ll have great success here in Madrid, with the courts playing slightly faster and him in good form, I expect him to take down Harris and move on to the Round of 32 at the 2022 Madrid Open.
Lloyd Harris hasn’t been playing too well as of late after his amazing 2021 season. I don’t really think clay suits him, but if there was a place on the surface where he would thrive, it would likely be on the clay courts of Madrid. His opponent in Alejandro Davidovich Fokina though is quite the bad break. With ADF in such good form, I expect him to have little problems with taking out Harris and booking his spot in the next stage of the 2022 Madrid Open.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Lloyd Harris have met twice before, with Lloyd Harris leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came at Indian Wells last year, right after the US Open when Harris was in good form. Indian Wells did play super slow, so it’s a sign that Harris might be able to keep up. Ultimately though, Davidovich Fokina is simply in form and Harris is not, making him the clear favorite to take the win and move on here at the 2022 Madrid Open.
