Thanasi Kokkinakis started his 2022 season off in style last week at the Adelaide Open, beating the likes of Millman, Tiafoe, and Ymer to reach the Semi-Finals. Kokkinakis, when concentrated and confident, is a tough player to beat and he is determined to make 2022 his redemption season. Although he lost in easy fashion to Monfils in the Semi-Finals, Thanasi will know that this week at the 2022 Adelaide 2 Open will be good for him to go even further if he can not lose concentration, especially against the likes of Benoit Paire.
Benoit Paire played the opening match last week here in Adelaide, losing to Henri Laaksonen in 3 sets. Paire was a bit shameless in that when he was 5-2 down in the third set, he decided to retire from the match rather than let Henri close it out. You never know what you’re going to get from Benoit, especially as he meets a tough opponent in Thanasi Kokkinakis now at the 2022 Adelaide 2 Open. Will we see a solid or passive form of Benoit Paire?
Benoit Paire and Thanasi Kokkinakis have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Although Benoit is ranked almost 100 places higher in the rankings, Thanasi is in much better form than the Frenchman. It has been a long time coming for Benoit that he is no longer at the level required to compete in big tournaments, and if he starts to also show signs of nonchallantenes in these smaller tournaments, then it’s going to be a slippery road down to the challenger tour. Thanasi is concentrated and determined to turn his career around, and he will know that the more wins he gets early on here at the 2022 Adelaide 2 Open, the better momentum he will have for the rest of the month.
