ATP Cup 2022: Dan Evans vs. John Isner Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Dan Evans meets John Isner on Thursday January 6th, 2022 (January 5th at 7:00pm EST).

Long-time foes Great Britain and the United States will face off in the Group Stages at the 2022 ATP Cup in Sydney, with Dan Evans and John Isner doing battle at the #2 Singles position. Evans has been in fantastic form and starts as the favorite, but the big-serving veteran Isner should never be counted out. Who will get the win in this all important tie?

Dan Evans is ranked #25 on the ATP Tour and is the British number two player behind Cameron Norrie. After a strong 2021 campaign he will be hoping for more of the same this season, and has certainly started well, being one of the standout players so far here at the 2022 ATP Cup. A dominant straight sets victory over Jan-Lennard Struff was followed by a similarly impressive win over Denis Shapovalov, also in straight sets, and he is in the form of his life at the moment. If he continues like this then he should be considered the firm favorite here against John Isner, however he should be wary of the American’s huge serve and immense experience.

John Isner is ranked one spot ahead of his opponent Dan Evans at #24 on the ATP Tour. The big-serving American is approaching the twilight of his career but remains a very good player, and is coming off a successful 2021 season. After a comfortable win over the lowly ranked Brayden Schnur in his first match here at the 2022 ATP Cup, he fell to Jan-Lennard Struff in three very close sets. He knows that he will have to be much better here against the in-form Evans, and will have to draw on every ounce of his experience if he is to get the win for the USA.

This will be the third meeting between the pair on the ATP Tour, with the head to head record tied at 1-1. They split their matches back in 2019, both of which were close and hotly contested. This is a difficult match to call, with John Isner having the better career on this surface and the edge in experience, but Dan Evans being in red-hot form. It is hard to look past Evans here, as he has simply been dominant so far this week. Isner should always be in with a shout due to his serve, but if Evans can find a way to break serve a couple of times it should be one way traffic, with the point going to Great Britain here at the 2022 ATP Cup.
