TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Nikoloz Basilashvili on Day 5 on Wednesday, January 5th, 2021.
Will Nikoloz Basilashvili come out here and get a big win under his belt against a top 10 player? Will Stefanos Tsitsipas find his rhythm and get a win for Team Greece as they have lost both ties they have played in? This match is really not that important in terms of Greece or Georgia’s chances of passing the group stage, as that seems out of reach for both teams. However, both players will still want to find some form here at the 2022 ATP Cup.
Nikoloz Basilashvili was supposed to play against Hubert Hurkacz in his second match here, but he did not. I am not sure whether this is due to injury, or whether he felt not in good enough form to come out and give it his best shot. Whatever it may be, if he comes out on court against Stefanos Tsitsipas, the Georgian will know that his team’s chances of getting anywhere here at the 2022 ATP Cup are out of the window. The only importance this match has will be of pride, and whether Nikoloz has the game to compete with the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Stefanos Tsitsipas will be very disappointed with his performance in his first match here at the 2022 ATP Cup, losing against Diego Schwartzman in 3 sets. Tsitsipas seemed on top of his game at many times, and was even a set and a break up. However, as we have often seem from the Greek, when he thinks things are going his way, he tends to lift his foot off the pedal. With this being said, this was still his first Singles match back since his elbow surgery, so there was some rust. Can Tsitsipas get a win against Nikoloz Basilashvili to give himself a little bit of confidence?
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nikoloz Basilashvili have met 3 times before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 2-1. They met once last year, with Nikoloz winning that match in 3 sets. Although Nikoloz won their most recent encounter in similar conditions, I think that if Stefanos can come out here and play like he did for the first set and a half against Schwartzman, he will win this easily. Nikoloz played terribly in his first match, and pulled out of the second, so it’s not as if he is in great form here at the 2022 ATP Cup.
