TennisSection previews the 2021 Mubadala World Tennis Championship as Andrey Rublev takes on Denis Shapovalov in Round 2 on Friday, December 17th, 2021.
Will Denis Shapovalov come out here and show us another dominant display of tennis as he aims to set up a meeting in the Final with most likely Rafa Nadal? Will Andrey Rublev come out in style and show us his relentless power and accuracy off of his forehand? These two youngsters will come out here knowing that this will be a good test to see where their respective level is at before the start of the season. Who will make their way to the Final of the 2021 Mubadala World Tennis Championship?
Denis Shapovalov came out in amazing form in his opening match here at the 2021 Mubadala Championship, beating the always tough Taylor Fritz in straight sets 6-3/6-0. If you had tuned into the match just an hour late, it was already done, that’s how fast Shapovalov got the win under his belt. The flamboyant playing style of the Canadian is great to see and he will know that if he can do that against Fritz, he can definitely keep riding this momentum and perhaps give himself a strong chance of making the Final here as he now meets Andrey Rublev.
Andrey Rublev will be coming in here on the back of the Davis Cup a few weeks ago where he helped Team Russia win. Andrey was not in his best form there to begin, but as the tournament went along he found his rhythm and finished the tournament in style. Andrey has a great game, with so much power, speed of shot and movement, and he is also very precise. However, he can often let his emotions get in the way when he loses something. I expect for him to want to come out here and give it his best to give himself a boost of confidence at the 2021 Mubadala Championship before the start of the season, but after that Denis Shapovalov display on Thursday, what can the Russian do?
Andrey Rublev and Denis Shapovalov have met 4 times before, with the head to head tied 2-2. They last met in 2020 in the Final of St. Petersburg, where Andrey won. Denis was in great form in his first match against Taylor Fritz, but you also have to know that Taylor was incredibly sub-par and not ready to play. Andrey has been training a lot here and I think that he will want to show why he is a Top 5 player and get a strong, but tight, win against a fellow peer in the Next Generation. Denis will keep things close, but I expect for Andrey to get the win in the end at the 2021 Mubadala Championship.
