San Diego Open 2021: Casper Ruud vs Grigor Dimitrov Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 San Diego Open as Casper Ruud takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the Semi-Finals on Saturday, October 2nd, 2021.

Will Casper Ruud move on? Will Grigor Dimitrov pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we will see if Ruud can get through this test and have a shot at the title. Who will move on to the final at the 2021 San Diego Open?

Casper Ruud got a great win over Lorenzo Sonego, taking him out easily 6-1 6-4. He put on an incredible display, really showing why he is a top 10 player and how he has the potential to be an excellent hard-court player. He hardly made any unforced errors, and really hit his spots with the serve when it mattered, also defending very well and coming to the net relatively often. If he is able to do the same thing against Grigor Dimitrov, who has been known to make many unforced errors this year, I expect him to get a pretty straightforward win. As long as he makes a lot of serves, and starts to dictate play with that heavy forehand of his, then I do definitely expect him to just be able to dominate a lot of the points, as Dimitrov does make a lot of unforced errors, and it will be tough for him to deal with Ruud’s game as he goes for a spot in the final at the 2021 San Diego Open.

Grigor Dimitrov got an interesting win over Aslan Karatsev to set up this meeting with Casper Ruud in the semifinals. In 3 very straightforward sets, he managed to edge him out in the end, being able to stay a little more consistent and serve better. While those results may seem slightly promising, to take out Ruud with his level of play at the moment will be a challenge. Ruud is a very consistent ball striker, and I think Dimitrov will struggle to get into very many points as Ruud will quickly turn the tide of the rallies into his favor, utilizing that forehand to its fullest, and being able to dictate Dimitrov around the court. Dimitrov is going to have to hit pretty flat and hard, and hope that he can simply hit winners, it’s a very risky and difficult gameplan to pull off, but let’s see if he can do it to challenge Ruud for a spot in the final at the 2021 San Diego Open.

Casper Ruud and Grigor Dimitrov have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. The two haven’t met before, and it will be an interesting matchup, but ultimately, I feel like it will favor Casper Ruud, as he is able to make a lot more shots and on top of that is able to play aggressively when it matters most. Dimitrov also didn’t serve that great, so if Ruud can simply get a lot of the returns in, I feel like he could get a pretty lopsided win. Still, Dimitrov can come up with some exceptional tennis, so it will be interesting to see if Ruud can show that high level he showed in his quarterfinal match to take out Dimitrov and progress to the final at the 2021 San Diego Open.
