TennisSection previews the 2021 ATP Finals as Novak Djokovic takes on Cameron Norrie in the group stages on Friday, November 19th, 2021.
Will Novak Djokovic get the win? Will Cameron Norrie pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a fascinating matchup with two opposing styles. Who will finish the group stages on the best note at the 2021 ATP Finals?
Novak Djokovic got a very good win over Andrey Rublev, taking him down in straight sets: 6-3 6-2. Yes, Djokovic is a poor matchup for Rublev, but to dismantle him at such a level shows that the world no. 1 is still in very good form, and will very likely dominate Cameron Norrie to cap off the group stages. Djokovic definitely wants to win the ATP Finals, so maybe he won’t give it his all, as he will want to be fresh. However, I don’t really see Djokovic tanking, so assuming he’s putting in effort, he’s too good for Norrie, especially on an indoor hard court where Norrie will be rather helpless against the Serb as the two aim to be the one to finish their 2021 ATP Finals runs on a good note.
Cameron Norrie got to play after Tsitsipas withdrew, being able to play against Ruud and now Djokovic. Norrie doesn’t like indoor hard courts, as his game revolves around hitting a heavy forehand and dictating play with it, but he was able to get a set against Ruud and showed us that he is determined. It’s very similar to Rafa, who despite being much better than Norrie at the same strategy, is not that good on indoor hard courts, never lifting the ATP Finals title. Novak Djokovic on the other hand is one of the greatest indoor hard court players of all time, so to take him down especially when he’s in this form will be incredibly challenging as he attempts to take down the world no. 1 and manage to finish the 2021 ATP Finals on a win.
Novak Djokovic and Cameron Norrie have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s a terrible matchup for Norrie, especially on this super quick court. Norrie doesn’t serve big, allowing Djokovic to crush his returns even more so than usual, Djokovic has been serving unbelievably well while Norrie does not have the best return. Norrie is in this position to play in the ATP Finals because of his rallying ability, not missing often and using Nadal type plays with his heavy forehand. On this court though against Novak Djokovic, those tactics will be useless. He was able to get some success against Casper Ruud who is also not much of an indoor hard court player, but assuming Djokovic is putting in effort, I expect him to easily cruise through Norrie as he aims to finish his on top of his group undefeated.
