TennisSection previews the 2021 Stockholm Open as Denis Shapovalov takes on Tommy Paul in the final on Saturday, November 13th, 2021.
Will Denis Shapovalov get the win? Will Tommy Paul pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have an unexpected but fun matchup for the title. Who will win the 2021 Stockholm Open?
Denis Shapovalov got a fantastic win to upset Felix Auger-Aliassime and advance to the final where he will take on Tommy Paul, another surprise finalist. He managed to play a consistent game in his semifinal encounter, whilst also being able to serve well and take advantage of his opportunities, just playing solid tennis overall to get the win in two tight sets. To take on Tommy Paul and win the title, he will have to focus on playing big, Paul doesn’t have the weapons to take out someone like Denis if he will continue to play at this level. Let’s see if Shapovalov can meet expectations and win the 2021 Stockholm Open.
Tommy Paul pulled off a stunner over Frances Tiafoe in three very tight sets to set up yet another tough meeting with the number three seed in Denis Shapovalov. If he wants to take him out, he will have to focus on playing aggressively but only in the right moments. Shapovalov is incredibly inconsistent, but he still is a top 20 player in the world, and considering he upset FAA in the semis in a relatively straightforward manner, despite the fact that he is inconsistent he remains the very clear favorite to take the 2021 Stockholm Open title.
Denis Shapovalov and Tommy Paul have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Shapovalov is a huge player, he hits enormous groundstrokes and has incredible touch and talent. He’s sort of like a left-handed Federer, but without the athleticism and not at nearly as high of a level, also utilizing a lot more power. If he can be disciplined and just stay in the rallies longer, and focus on not making nearly as many unforced errors, then he can be one of the best players in the world. Let’s see if he can take down Tommy Paul, a guy with a tough playing style who beat fantastic players to get here. Paul has been playing good, and although he must be tired and Shapovalov has the experience and level, due to the many inconsistencies in his game and in this whole tournament, I think the match will go the distance with Shapovalov eventually edging him out. It should be an interesting final to determine the winner of the 2021 Stockholm Open.
