ATP Finals 2021: Alexander Zverev vs. Matteo Berrettini Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 ATP Finals as Alexander Zverev takes on Matteo Berrettini in the Round Robin stage on Sunday, November 14th, 2021.

Will Alexander Zverev record a win on his fifth straight appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals? Or will Matteo Berrettini give the home fans something to cheer about on Sunday? This will be a battle between two of the biggest forehands in the business. Who will come out on top?

Alexander Zverev, as mentioned, is making his fifth consecutive appearance at the season-ending finale. He won the tournament in 2018, and reached the semifinal in 2019. But in his other two appearances, he did not make it out of the group stage. Zverev will have his hands full in the Red Group which boasts a formidable opposition that includes Daniil Medvedev, Hubert Hurkacz, and his first opponent Matteo Berrettini. The German believes this is the tougher group of the two, but while matches at the ATP Finals don’t come easier, he may have a point. All contestants in the group are pretty much in the same mold –  big, powerful, and in top form. Will the former champion prevail in the second match of day one?

Matteo Berrettini will pose a big threat to Zverev’s chances of winning his first ATP Finals match of 2021. Not only does he possess one of the most devastating forehands in men’s tennis, but he will have a jam-packed home crowd cheering for him. Berrettini is the lone Italian in the singles field after Jannik Sinner missed out from the top eight at the very last moment. Berrettini has produced another tremendous season that saw him win two ATP tour titles as well as reaching his first Grand Slam final at the Wimbledon Championships. With a 41-11 record in 2021, he will be playing just his fifth match on an indoor hard court this season.

Alexander Zverev leads Matteo Berrettini 3-1 in their head-to-head. The match at the ATP Finals will be just their second meeting of 2021. Zverev toppled the Italian in the Madrid final earlier this season in three pulsating sets. Berrettini’s only win over Zverev came on home soil when he beat the German in straight sets in 2019 at the Rome Masters. Any lapses in concentration or any sort of profligacy from Zverev’s side will be punished severely by the Italian on Sunday. I think a vociferous home crowd could make Zverev a bit edgy. And if we start seeing him produce charitable double faults, maybe it could be Berrettini’s day.
