TennisSection previews the 2021 WTA Finals as Karolina Pliskova takes on Garbine Muguruza in the Round Robin Stage on Wednesday, November 10th, 2021.
Will Karolina Pliskova maintain her winning streak over Garbine Muguruza? Or will the Spaniard turn the tables on this lopsided rivalry when they meet at the 2021 WTA Finals? We preview a clash of two big-hitters going head-to-head in the second match of the day at the season-ending championships.
Making her fifth straight appearance at the WTA Finals, Karolina Pliskova will hope this time it’s a charm. The big-serving Czech has fallen at the semifinal stage in each of the last three editions, and did not get out of the group stages in her debut appearance in 2016. In the absence of Ashleigh Barty, Pliskova is the most experienced player in the women’s singles field at this tournament. And aside from that, she has a winning record against each opponent she is slated to meet at the group stages. That includes Garbine Muguruza whom Pliskova has defeated a whopping eight times from their previous 10 matches. The 29-year-old’s major highlight of 2021 remains the Wimbledon runner-up finish she attained in July. With a 35-18 record for the season, the Czech will look to bounce back from her surprise defeat at Indian Wells.
This will be Garbine Muguruza’s fourth appearance at the WTA Finals and her first since 2017. After a couple of disengaging years, Muguruza has enjoyed a career resurgence in 2021 which has been rewarded handsomely. She ended her two-year wait for a WTA title when she won the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in the first half of the season. Her second title of the year came in somewhat bizarre fashion, benefitting from two walkovers en route to the final in Chicago where she beat Ons Jabeur in three sets. That resulted proved critical in Muguruza’s qualification for Guadalajara. She opens up against a familiar foe in Karolina Pliskova, but she doesn’t have a great record against her.
As mentioned at the top of the article, Karolina Pliskova absolutely owns Garbine Muguruza in this rivalry. The Czech enters this contest as a marginal favorite having won eight out of 10 matches against the Spanish baseliner. This matchup favors the Czech because of her ability to rob Muguruza time and space on the ball. The Spaniard struggles to find her linear precision when she is extended and tends to have a difficult time to stay on the offence because Pliskova’s power will keep her locked. I expect another comfortable evening for Pliskova here.
