TennisSection previews the 2021 Paris Masters as Dan Evans takes on Alexander Bublik in the Round of 64 on Monday, November 1st, 2021.
An intriguing battle of flair and flamboyance will see Dan Evans lock horns with Alexander Bublik in the first round of the 2021 Paris Masters. Evans has put together a modest 24-21 record for the year and has been overtaken as British No. 1 by the in-form Cameron Norrie. Will Evans make amends for his drop-off in form, or will Alexander Bublik extend his winning streak over the world No. 24?
Dan Evans crashed out from his most recent tournament in Vienna, losing to the Spanish prodigy Carlos Alcaraz in the opening round. Evans’ craftiness proved ineffective to counter Alcaraz’s raw power. Ultimately, he fell 6-4 6-3 in his first indoor event of the season. Now attention turns to the Paris Masters where the British No. 2 is making his second appearance in France’s capital. Last year he lost to Stan Wawrinka in the first round, and he has not had any sort of respite by getting another tricky opener this time round.
Flamboyant Kazakh Alexander Bublik has improved by leaps and bounds this season, but he has been made to wait for his first ATP Tour title of his career. Bublik has finished runner-up twice this season. First up in Antalya where he was unfortunate to pick up an ankle injury that forced his retirement in the championship match. And then in Singapore he fell short to the heavy-hitting Aussie Alexei Popyrin. Bublik has performed with distinction making regular deep runs at the most prestigious tournaments on the calendar.
Alexander Bublik owns a 2-1 head-to-head record over Dan Evans. The Kazakh won their last meeting at the Toronto Masters a few months ago in straight sets. But surprisingly enough, Dan Evans starts as the marginal favorite according to the oddsmakers. I can’t underestimate Bublik’s motivation despite his lackluster showings in St. Petersburg and Moscow. If the 24-year-old’s game is firing on all cylinders, he can be a nuisance to play against. From the cheeky underarm serves to hitting with purpose, Bublik can do it all. Evans is a momentum player and right now, he looks well off.
