TennisSection previews the 2021 Geneva Open as Roger Federer (1) meets Pablo Andujar in the Round of 16 on Tuesday, May 18th, 2021.
Will Pablo Andujar be able to cause a huge upset and get a memorable victory over one of the best players of all time? Will Roger Federer get his clay court season off to a strong start as he looks to get his game ready for the French Open at the end of the month? This will be an interesting match to see where Federer’s playing level is at, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Geneva Open. Who will win?
Pablo Andujar cruised through his Round of 32 match here at the 2021 Geneva Open, beating the Australian Jordan Thompson in straight sets 6-0/6-4. This match was expected to be somewhat tighter, but Thompson just never found his footing on the clay as he is more of a hard court player. Pablo Andujar did perform well, with heavy and long groundstrokes and great footwork, but he definitely got handed many of the games he won because Thompson did not come out playing well. Now that Andujar meets Roger Federer, he will have to be at his best if he wants to beat one of the all-time greats in the Round of 16.
Roger Federer is back on the ATP Tour for his second tournament in over 2 years, last having played at the Doha Open, losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili in his second match there. Roger is back on the clay courts now, and this is only his 2nd time on the clay season in the last 5 years as he did not play for 3 years on clay, then played in 2019, and has not played in a clay court tournament since then. Roger Federer will be rusty coming into this tournament, but he will be using the 2021 Geneva Open to get a few victories under his belt and get a feel for the game before he goes to the French Open towards the end of this month. However, Federer faces a tough and experienced challenger in Pablo Andujar right from the start.
Roger Federer and Pablo Andujar have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Shockingly they have never met before although they have been playing for 23 years and 18 years on the ATP Tour respectively. Pablo will be confident coming into this match as he has gotten a solid victory under his belt already. Roger will be rusty in the first set, but he knows how to maintain his serve for long enough to get a feel for his opponents service games. Set wise, this could go to both 2 or 3 sets, but one thing is for sure, Roger Federer will win this match and make his way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 Geneva Open.
