Will Roger Federer improve on his first match as he searches for his best game? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 32 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Who will it be?
Richard Gasquet came through a 4-set win in the Round of 128, beating the experienced Sugita 7-6/4-6/6-2/6-1. Richard Gasquet was up and down in the first two sets, but once the third set began, he found his best level and was dominating the match. Richard Gasquet will be happy with that performance and he will want to finally get his 3rd win over Roger Federer. He will use all of his experience, and the fact that his fellow Frenchman, Adrian Mannarino, performed strongly against the Swiss to give himself the best chance to cause the upset.
Roger Federer did not win the match against Adrian Mannarino on merit, but unfortunately won due to Mannarino having to retire at 2-2 sets as he injured his knee. Roger Federer said after the match that Mannarino was playing much better, and I am sure that if it did go to a 5th set, we would have seen a very tight ending. But this can still be good for Roger as he can now analyse what he did wrong in the match and he did not play a long 5th set, giving him more time to recover. Roger will know he has a tough road ahead at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, but for now he will be looking for his 19th win over Richard Gasquet.
Roger Federer and Richard Gasquet have met 20 times before, with Roger Federer leading the head to head 18-2. Roger has always had the best of Richard, with the Frenchmans last win over Federer coming 10 years ago in Rome on clay. Although Roger Federer is not at his best, I am sure he will improve from his first match here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Richard Gasquet will get a set under his belt I believe, but Roger will not want to let this match go to 5 sets as he aims to recover for more important matches later on in the tournament.
