Vienna Open 2021: Alexander Zverev vs. Carlos Alcaraz Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Vienna Open as Alexander Zverev takes on Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals on Saturday, October 30th, 2021.

Will Alexander Zverev get the win? Will Carlos Alcaraz pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a very interesting matchup with one of the top players in the world coming up against a next-gen star. Who will move on to the final at the 2021 Vienna Open?

Alexander Zverev has been playing incredible tennis, hardly losing any matches in the last several months. Throughout the week he’s been a little shaky, but for the most part he’s still playing his huge game, dominating from the back of the court and with his serve and return, as is evident by his appearance in the semifinals. He has a tough match coming up against Carlos Alcaraz, who is getting better and better by the day. He should get the win, and he has a pretty favorable matchup against him for one key reason – the backhand. On top of that of course, his ranking and results are very indicative of their levels of play, however, their backhand to backhand exchanges would heavily favor Zverev, giving him a very decisive edge. I expect him to get through a tough match, but ultimately put his foot down in the end to send Alcaraz home and move on to the final at the 2021 Vienna Open.

Carlos Alcaraz got an incredible win against world number seven in Matteo Berrettini, barely edging it out in 3 sets, 7-5 in the third set tiebreaker. He now has an even tougher match against world number four and second seed Alexander Zverev. In order to get through Zverev, he will simply have to go all out with his forehand. His base game is incredible, and his talent is clearly there, but Zverev has a much better first serve, a much better return, and a much better backhand. So Alcaraz will have to try and simply attack and attack, punching his forehand down the line and crosscourt, hoping to be able to keep Zverev from being able to simply stand on the baseline and bully him. It will be a really tough one without a doubt, and I expect Zverev to put his foot down and get the win, even if he’s been a little shaky as the two clash for a place in the final at the 2021 Vienna Open.

Alexander Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz have met once before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came in Acapulco this year, with Zverev winning easily 6-3 6-1. Of course, Alcaraz is a much better player now, but Zverev has also improved. That court was quite quick, and this one is also definitely on the faster side, which favors Zverev as he doesn’t need as much time as Alcaraz to be aggressive. Zverev has been shaky this week, losing leads and sets when he really shouldn’t have, but he ultimately got through all of those matches, always crushing his opponent in the end. I expect a similar story here, with Zverev being able to get the win in the end and booking his spot in the final at the 2021 Vienna Open.
