TennisSection previews the 2021 Vienna Open as Matteo Berrettini takes on Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, October 27th, 2021.
Will Nikoloz Basilashvili continue to play incredible tennis as he aims to get another big win under his belt after some amazing weeks on the ATP Tour? Will Matteo Berrettini show us why he is called the hammer and why he is the best Italian player on the ATP Tour? Both players can put on a great performance in these conditions, but who will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Vienna Open?
Nikoloz Basilashvili had to fight through an incredibly tight 3 set match to start the 2021 Vienna Open, beating the always tough Spaniard, Pablo Carreno Busta. If this was a few months ago, I would have backed Pablo in that match. However, with the amazing tennis that Nikoloz has shown over the last few weeks, reaching the Final of Indian Wells, really shows us how good he can be on the ATP Tour. Nikoloz is a fighter on the court and he can hit the ball so hard consistently. However, he meets another very hard hitter in Matteo Berrettini now.
Matteo Berrettini cruised through his opening round match against the young Australian, Alexei Popyrin, beating him in straight sets 7-6/6-3. All was looking good in Matteo’s game in that match, winning 79% and 78% of points on his first and second serve respectively, and not letting his opponent see even 1 break point. Matteo has now qualified for the ATP Finals in his home country, so he will want to get some strong matches under his belt both here in Vienna and in Paris next week as he aims to enter that tournament with a lot of momentum. However, he cannot take Nikoloz Basilashvili too lightly here at the 2021 Vienna Open.
Matteo Berrettini and Nikoloz Basilashvili have met 5 times before, with Matteo Berrettini leading the head to head 3-2. Matteo has won the last 3 encounters, and their latest one was this year in Rome. That match was tight and won by Matteo in 3 sets. Since then, both of them have improved, with Matteo having made many late stages of tournaments, including the Final at Wimbledon, and Nikoloz reaching his maiden Masters 1000 Final. Although in the last week or so, Nikoloz has been in great form, I still see the Italian coming through this one and making his way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Vienna Open.
