TennisSection previews the 2021 St Petersburg Open as Denis Shapovalov takes on Pablo Andujar in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, October 27th, 2021.
Will Denis Shapovalov get the win? Will Pablo Andujar pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have one of the most exciting players in the world taking on a surprise emerger this year. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 St Petersburg Open?
Denis Shapovalov has not been performing as well as he would have liked lately, crashing out early in almost every tournament he’s played since Wimbledon. He has a great shot to redeem himself a little bit and move on to the next round here at the 2021 St Petersburg Open as he takes on Pablo Andujar. Andujar plays a game where he focuses a lot on making every shot, and occasionally pulling the trigger, sort of like RBA and PCB but on a less extreme level. Shapovalov should get the win here, as the conditions will favor him heavily, however, it most certainly will not be a cakewalk, especially if Shapovalov continues playing with the inconsistency that he’s been showing as of late. Let’s see if Denis can regroup to play that poppy, aggressive game we know he has and get a good start to his campaign here at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Pablo Andujar got a solid win to set up this tough meeting with the number two seed in Denis Shapovalov. Andujar definitely prefers the clay, as faster courts aren’t really his thing, whereas Shapovalov definitely prefers quicker courts. Shapovalov has not been in form since making the semifinals at Wimbledon, crashing out in the first round in practically every tournament. His strokes are beautiful, however, he is lacking a concrete way of actually using them. It feels as if he fires them off at random, he needs to have discipline, focusing on making sure he uses his strokes to set up points, and having a more detailed gameplan when he steps out onto the court. Either way though, Andujar will struggle, as Shapovalov is still a top player in the world, and will likely wrap this one up in straight sets despite any struggles he’s had as of late as the two fight for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Denis Shapovalov and Pablo Andujar have met once before, with Denis Shapovalov leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came at the 2019 edition of the Australian Open, with Shapovalov winning easily in straight sets. You’d think if Shapovalov was able to win easily two years ago, then now would be a cakewalk. However, I actually think his level has dropped since that year. Even still, that win shows he has a clear advantage on quick hard courts, utilizing his aggressive game to be able to blow past Andujar’s much more passive game that’s built for slower courts. Let’s see if Shapovalov is able to regroup and show us a good level as he attempts to kick off his campaign here at the 2021 St Petersburg Open with a great win to progress to the quarterfinals.
