TennisSection previews the 2021 Vienna Open as Alex de Minaur meets Kevin Anderson in the First Round on Monday October 25th, 2021.
An intriguing match is expected here in the First Round of the 2021 Vienna Open as Alex de Minaur of Australia will face South African Kevin Anderson. This is a very tricky match for both players and it is shaping up to be a very close encounter. Neither man has been at his best this season and they will be hoping for a strong showing this week here in Austria. Will it be the big serving Anderson getting the win? Or can the speedy Aussie advance to the Round of 16?
Alex de Minaur is currently ranked 32 on the ATP Tour and is unseeded here at the 2021 Vienna Open. The 22 year old Aussie can already be considered somewhat of a veteran on the circuit as he has a lot of high-level experience despite his young age. Once ranked as high as 15 in the world, he has had a very inconsistent season and has seen his ranking slide over the past few months. Although he has won two titles at Antalya and Eastbourne he has also had a host of early-round losses, and he will be very eager to bring some consistency back to his season. His lack of a major weapon will definitely work against him here on these quick indoor hard courts, so he will have to be at his defensive best to overcome a tough match with veteran Kevin Anderson.
Kevin Anderson is ranked 61 in the world rankings and like his opponent Alex de Minaur is unseeded here at the 2021 Vienna Open. The tall South African was once ranked in the top 5 but has suffered greatly over the past few years and his ranking has plummeted. While he has been inconsistent this year, he has shown signs of getting back to his best, most notably his title win at Newport earlier this season. Anderson was forced to qualify for this event, and will have had a chance to get accustomed to the conditions and the court. His huge serve will be the determining factor here on this quick surface, and it is very likely that he will win if he serves well. Despite his ranking being lower than his opponent’s, he is certainly capable of winning here if he is at his best.
Very surprisingly, this is the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour and I am expecting a very close and exciting match. The two players have very contrasting game styles, with Kevin Anderson possessing one of the biggest serves in tennis history, and Alex de Minaur being one of the best counterpunchers in the world. This match will undoubtedly be very close, but I am backing the South African to win here. His serve will be extremely difficult to cope with on this quick bouncy surface, and I think that that will be the difference here. de Minaur will give it his all, but Kevin Anderson will win here, and move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Vienna Open.
