TennisSection previews the 2021 St Petersburg Open as Ilya Ivashka takes on Laslo Djere in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, October 26th, 2021.
Will Ilya Ivashka get the win? Will Laslo Djere pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have one of the most improved players of the year taking on a tough test. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 St Petersburg Open?
Ilya Ivashka has been injured as of late, pulling out in Sofia and not playing a singles match since. However, assuming he’s all recovered, he should be able to get right back into the swing of things and grab the win. Laslo Djere should not be too much trouble for him, as Djere plays a more conservative game, and Ivashka loves to hit the ball very hard and take the ball early, playing a perfect aggressive game for a quick indoor hardcourt like this. He also played a few doubles matches at the Kremlin Cup, reaching the semifinals, so we know he will likely be match ready and ready to make a good start to his campaign at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Laslo Djere has a really tough one ahead of him in Ilya Ivashka. Ivashka plays a game that will very likely counter his quite well. He’s not in too good of form either, bowing to Gilles Simon in a match that he really should have won, especially after taking the first set. He will have to play a very aggressive game if he wants a shot at Ilya Ivashka. Ivashka takes the ball very early and really hits through the court, in order to take him out, he will have to try and run him around the court, but that’s a lot easier said than done, as it will be hard to set up those kinds of points when he’s trying to deal with those quick shots. Let’s see if he can challenge Ivashka for a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Ilya Ivashka and Laslo Djere have met once before, with Ilya Ivashka leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came 3 years ago in France, with Ivashka easily winning in straight sets. If he was able to win that easily when he was nowhere near the player he is now, then I have high hopes for him to take advantage of the favorable matchup on the favorable conditions and get the win. He’s definitely a dark horse to look out for this tournament, let’s see if he can get a good start and kick off his campaign here at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
