TennisSection previews the 2021 Antwerp Open as Albert Ramos-Vinolas meets Jan-Lennard Struff in the First round on Tuesday October 19th, 2021.
A very close and intriguing match is expected here at the 2021 Antwerp Open as ATP Tour veterans Jan-Lennard Struff and Albert Ramos-Vinolas square off in the First Round. Despite being in the top 60 in the world, both men have been in very poor form lately and will be highly motivated to get off to a good start here in Belgium as they attempt a deep run.. Who will get the win and advance to the Round of 16?
Albert Ramos-Vinolas is unseeded here at the 2021 Antwerp Open and is currently ranked #48 on the ATP Tour. The Spanish lefty is a highly experienced player on the circuit and has built a very long and successful career. However, he has not had the greatest results lately, going 2-7 since reaching the Semi-Finals at the Croatia Open. Despite the miserable form and the fact that he is more of a clay court player, one of his recent wins was on hard courts over top 15 player Felix Auger-Aliassime. This proves that he can be a dangerous player on hard courts at times, and his opponent Jan-Lennard Struff would be wise to not underestimate him. He should be considered the slight favorite here but they are very close in the rankings and this is shaping off to be a very close battle.
Jan-Lennard Struff is ranked #54 in the world and like his opponent Albert Ramos-Vinolas is unseeded here at the 2021 Antwerp Open. The German is an extremely talented player with all the tools to be at the very top, but he has been very inconsistent and very hard to rely on. He hasn’t won more than one match at a tournament since the French Open, a shocking statistic for a player of his caliber. In this sort of form his confidence will have taken a beating, but he is still a very powerful player who can do some serious damage on this surface with his big serve and groundstrokes. While his opponent Ramos-Vinolas is more of a clay court player, he is still in better form and the German is in for a tough outing here.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with Albert Ramos-Vinolas leading the head to head 2-1. While Jan-Lennard Struff has the game that is better suited to this surface, he simply cannot be trusted and it is hard to see him getting the win here. Ramos-Vinolas doesn’t have much firepower but he has a huge edge in consistency and I expect him to eventually wear the erratic Struff down. You can expect a lot of big winners from the German, but he is also likely to commit numerous unforced errors and that will be his downfall here. It will be close, but Ramos-Vinolas will win here, advancing to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Antwerp Open.
