TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Diego Schwartzman (11) meets Cameron Norrie (21) in the Quarter-Finals on Thursday October 14th, 2021.
Can Diego Schwartzman continue his impressive run here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open? Or will it be the consistent lefty Cameron Norrie moving on to next round? Both men have been outstanding so far in California and will have their eyes firmly set on their first Masters-1000 Semi-Final for the year. This is sure to be an exciting match, and will come down to who is tactically stronger on the day, who will get the win and advance here?
Diego Schwartzman is currently ranked #15th in the ATP world rankings and is the 11th seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open. The Argentine star has been having a miserable season for the most part and has failed to replicate his success from 2020. However, there is no denying his quality and he has been outstanding here, especially his straight-sets dismantling of Casper Ruud, who has been one of the standout players this season. Schwartzman doesn’t have a lot of firepower but is a very intelligent player that takes the ball early to unsettle his opponents. With his elite defense and speed it is usually necessary to hit through him, and that is something that his next opponent Cameron Norrie is unlikely to be able to do.
Cameron Norrie is the 21st seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is ranked number 25 in the world. The British #2 has been one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour this season, already reaching nine Quarter-Finals and won his maiden title in Los Cabos earlier in the year. He will be hoping to reach his first ever Masters-1000 Semi-Final and has started strongly here, but spent more time on court than he would have liked, being pushed to three sets by each of his opponents so far. He was impressive in his win over local favorite Tommy Paul in the Round of 16, and will be hoping to carry that momentum into his next match against Diego Schwartzman.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Cameron Norrie leading the head to head 2-1. The Brit won their last two meetings and that will give him a lot of confidence, however we are backing Diego Schwartzman to win a very close and intense match here. He has a lot more experience at this stage of the draw in bigger events, and his Round of 16 win was a lot more assured than that of Norrie. It undoubtedly will be a grind, but Diego Schwartzman has that little extra quality that his opponent does not, and I expect him to win here, advancing to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
