TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Karen Khachanov takes on Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, October 13th, 2021.
Will Karen Khachanov move on? Will Nikoloz Basilashvili pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have two players in great form coming to a clash. Who will move onto the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open?
Karen Khachanov played a fantastic match against Carreno Busta to set up this meeting with Nikoloz Basilashvili. He proved that he has the game to play really well on all surfaces including slow courts. He served great, and even managed to return really well, playing that aggressive and big game from the back of the court. It won’t be easy against Basilashvili, who also has a big game, playing somewhat like Alexander Zverev, just not as high of a level. Khachanov has a good shot to win it, if he can serve as well as he did today, he can get it done in two, however, Basilashvili plays really well at his best, and Khachanov is not exactly known for keeping a consistent level, so I definitely feel like the match will go the distance, but ultimately just due to the level they showed in their respective matches. I think Khachanov will grab the win and move through to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Nikoloz Basilashvili got through a tough one to play Karen Khachanov for a spot in the next round. He dropped a set to an opponent who did play well, but still not someone who he should have dropped a set to. While he did get it together eventually, his serving was not too consistent, and if he’ll be hitting a lot of second serves, he’ll be giving Khachanov time. He is not someone who you should be giving time to, as when he gets enough of it, he will play a huge ball, and play that aggressive game that players fear. In order for Basilashvili to get the win, he will have to try and get into a lot of backhand exchanges crosscourt, as he has a really good two-hander, and would surely dominate Khachanov in those rallies. However, to be able to get into that position time and time again is a big ask, and Khachanov will likely clinch out the win in three to book himself a spot in the next round at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
Karen Khachanov and Nikoloz Basilashvili have played 3 times before, with Karen Khachanov leading the head to head 2-1. The head to head doesn’t give away much, considering their meetings are all spread out in the last 5 years, and they haven’t played in 2. However, their one meeting on clay Khachanov did grab, and Khachanov is not that great on clay courts, since Indian Wells is playing so slow, if Khachanov has the base to beat Basilashvili on a court like that, then I think that gives him an additional edge here. We should be in for a tight one, but ultimately, I expect Khachanov to tough it out and grab the win to go through to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
