TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Matteo Berrettini (9) meets Federico Coria in the Round of 64 on Thursday, June 3rd 2021.
Will Federico Coria be able to get the biggest win of his career under his belt as he looks to beat a Top 10 player here at Roland Garros? Will Matteo Berrettini improve on his strong performance in his opening match here in Paris? This will be an interesting match between two players who play quite differently. Who will come out on top to make their way to the Round of 32 at the 2021 French Open?
Federico Coria already got a big win under his belt here in the Round of 128, beating the very experienced and tough Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez, in straight sets 6-3/7-6/6-2. Federico Coria will be very confident in his game after that win as he was able to boss around such a strong player who knows how to win tough matches. Federico is never usually seen in the later rounds in the first weeks of slams, unlike his brother used to be, but I am sure he will be working very hard on his game plan now to ensure he can be somewhat competitive against a Top 10 player who has had a lot of success on clay in 2021, Matteo Berrettini.
Matteo Berrettini was cruising through his match against Taro Daniel, leading 2-0 sets. However, as he did in their prior encounter a month ago, he eventually let his guard down. This allowed Taro Daniel to get back into the match by winning the third set. Matteo Berrettini then had to switch back and get back to giving it his best by hitting massive serves and forehands to prevent his opponent from having control of the ball. Once this changed, Matteo won in 4 sets 6-0/6-4/4-6/6-4. Matteo will need to ensure he does not let his guard down again in a match, especially in this side of the draw as he will met some big name players the more he wins. Can he prevent the potential upset by Federico Coria?
Matteo Berrettini and Federico Coria have met 2 times before, with Matteo Berrettini leading the head to head 2-0. They have always met on clay, and unfortunately for Federico, he has never won a set against the Italian. Here at the 2021 French Open, Matteo will want to build more momentum and not lose a set like he did in his opening round match. Matteo has been playing some great tennis on clay this year, and he will want to do the same here at Roland Garros. Federico Coria is a solid player on his day, but he is still nowhere near the level of a top 10 player.
