TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Casper Ruud (6) meets Lloyd Harris (26) in the Third Round on Monday October 11th, 2021.
Yet another intriguing Third Round match is expected here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open as sixth seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud will do battle with the tall South African Lloyd Harris for a spot in the Round of 16. Ruud has been one of the standout performers this season and will have his eyes firmly fixed on winning a first Masters-1000 title, and he is considered a dark horse here at the BNP Paribas Open. Can Harris cause the upset and move on in his debut in the Indian Wells main draw?
Casper Ruud is the sixth seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is currently ranked #10 in the world. The Norwegian star has won a ATP Tour-leading five titles this year and will be liking his chances of going deep into this event. He is coming into this event with some serious momentum, having won the San Diego Open in dominant fashion last week. Ruud continued that strong streak into his Second Round match where he demolished Roberto Carballes Baena 6-1, 6-2. His aggressive baseline game is very effective on this surface, especially since he takes the ball very early, taking all the time away from his opponent. His only weakness which is his serve has been improving, and should allow him to win quite a few cheap points against his next opponent Lloyd Harris who can struggle at times with his return. Ruud is heaving favored to win here and is looking to be in excellent form.
Lloyd Harris is the 26th seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is ranked at a career-high #31 on the ATP Tour. The South African #1 has one of the biggest serves on Tour and backs it up well with a strong forehand. He is having a breakthrough season of sorts, reaching his first ATP-500 Final in Dubai and the Quarter-Finals of the US Open. That has seen him rocket up the rankings charts, and he will be hoping to end the year on a high by cracking the top 30. Unfortunately, he has been handed a difficult draw here in Indian Wells, and after an impressive win over the dangerous Alejandro Davidovich Fokina he will face Casper Ruud, one of the most in-form players on the ATP Tour. Harris is very confident and if he serves well he shouldn’t be written off, but Ruud is simply on another level now and will be extremely hard to beat.
This will be the second meeting between the two players with Casper Ruud leading the head to head series 1-0 after winning at Winston-Salem a few weeks ago. In that match, Lloyd Harris was forced to retire after losing the first set 6-1 and he will be eager to bounce back in a big way here at the BNP Paribas Open. While the South African is in good form, Ruud is playing like a man possessed and will surely get the win here. His aggressiveness and consistency will be too much for Harris to keep up with, and while he can keep it close due to his serve, he inevitably will be worn down by the Norwegian and will go down here. I think Ruud has an outside shot of winning the title here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open, and he will win this match, advancing to the Round of 16 with yet another dominant display.
