Indian Wells 2021: Denis Shapovalov vs Vasek Pospisil Tennis Pick and Prediction

Indian Wells 2021: Denis Shapovalov vs Vasek Pospisil Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Denis Shapovalov (9) meets Vasek Pospisil in the Second Round on Saturday October 9th, 2021.

An “all-Canadian affair” is the next match up here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open as Denis Shapovalov will do battle with countryman Vasek Pospisil for a spot in the Third Round. The talented young lefty is the obvious favorite and has made serious strides lately, breaking into the top 10 for the first time. However, he will have a lot of respect for his veteran countryman, and Pospisil will be using all of his experience to try to defeat his young opponent that he knows so well. Can he cause the massive upset? Or will the ninth seed get the win as expected and move on?

Denis Shapovalov is the ninth seed here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is currently ranked #13 on the ATP Tour. He is without doubt one of the most talented players on the circuit and has finally been living up to his potential that he has teased us with for many years. He is still yet to truly break out at a major tournament and he will be hoping that he can take advantage of this weakened field, and is in the second tier of favorites for this title after Medvedev, Tsitsipas and Zverev. His explosive baseline game and huge serve are huge weapons on this hard court, and he is the big favorite here against Vasek Pospisil. However he would be wise to not underestimate his opponent who has bags of experience, and he is likely someone that Shapovalov looks up to. Once he plays his game and is focused he will be backing himself to win here.

Vasek Pospisil is unseeded here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open and is ranked #68 in the world. The Canadian was ranked among the top 25 players in the world but has been on a decline lately, not having many results of note. That being said, he is still in with a chance here against Denis Shapovalov, as the youngster will have spent a lot of time with Pospisil on the Canadian Davis Cup team and may consider him something of a mentor. His serve is still a dangerous weapon, especially on this surface and he is capable of some strong tennis at times. He was surprisingly pushed to three sets by JJ Wolf in the First Round and will have to be much improved here if he is to have any chance. Make no mistake, he is the massive underdog but Shapovalov has been known to lose focus at times, so this match is far from a given.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Shapovalov leading the head to head 2-1. Interestingly, he has won both of their matches on outdoor hard, and Vasek Pospisil won indoor. While this looks like a mismatch on paper, I am expecting it to be tougher than it looks, but Shapovalov will still emerge victorious. He is simply too dynamic for his older opponent and Pospisil hasn’t given us any indication that he is still capable of winning a match like this. Shapovalov may be a bit unsettled facing his countryman, but he has matured leaps and bounds lately and I expect him to win this match in two tight sets, advancing to the Third Round here at the 2021 Indian Wells Open.
