TennisSection previews the 2021 Sofia Open as Gael Monfils (2) will face Gianluca Mager in the Quarter-Finals on Friday October 1st, 2021.
Gael Monfils is one of the biggest entertainers on the ATP Tour and the popular Frenchman is finally beginning to look like himself after a long stretch of poor form. He will face Italian Gianluca Mager for a spot in the Semi-Finals and enters this match as the overwhelming favorite. Mager has looked good so far this week but has a mountain to climb here against the experienced Monfils. Can he cause the shocking upset? Or will Monfils continue his renaissance and advance here?
Gael Monfils is the second seed here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is currently ranked #20 on the ATP Tour. After a very long stretch of terrible form where he struggled to string wins together, the dynamic Frenchman is is seemingly back to his best, much to the delight of all tennis fans. When he is playing well he is one of the very best players in the world and is a huge crowd pleaser wherever he goes due to his unique and explosive game style. After a strong showing at the Moselle Open last week where he reached the Semi-Finals, he has reached the Quarters here without setting foot on court as his opponent Ilya Ivashka withdrew. While Monfils is the heavy favorite here due to his experience and powerful style, his opponent Gianluca Mager has already played two matches and will be comfortable on the surface. Monfils has had success on this surface in the past, so it is not likely that his lack of match time will be too important here.
Gianluca Mager is unseeded here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is ranked #78 in the world rankings. The Italian has been in poor form lately, but reversed that trend by winning both his matches over Miomir Kecmanovic and 6th seeded Adrian Mannarino in straight sets. This is not his favored surface but he has been impressive, being very attacking and taking the ball very early. While this play seems unsustainable, it should be ignored and since Gael Monfils has not yet had a chance to get accustomed to the courts the Italian may push him here. He is still considered the underdog, but the lack of court time and the fact that Monfils has not been trustworthy over the past two seasons will make some punters think twice.
This is the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting an easy victory for the veteran Frenchman Gael Monfils. Even though he has not been at his best for quite some time and has lost a step as he gets older, he is still the much better player, and his vast experience and previous success on indoor hard courts make him an overwhelming favorite here at the 2021 Sofia Open. Gianluca Mager has played well so far this week and will try his best to make it interesting, but ultimately he will fall short here and lose in straight sets. Monfils will win comfortably here, advancing to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Sofia Open.
