TennisSection previews the 2021 Sofia Open as Filip Krajinovic (5) meets Kamil Majchrzak in the Quarter-Finals on Friday October 1st, 2021.
Can the Polish Qualifier Kamil Majchrzak stun the fifth seeded Filip Krajinovic of Serbia here at the 2021 Sofia Open? The two men will do battle here for a spot in Saturday’s Semi-Final and they have both played some outstanding tennis so far here in Bulgaria. The Serbian is the much more experienced player and enters this match as the big favorite by virtue of his higher ranking. Can the Qualifier play the match of his life and advance to his first Semi-Final of his career? Or will the veteran get the win as expected in his quest to win his first ATP title?
Filip Krajinovic is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is ranked #37 in the world. The Serbian has been having a relatively poor season and has really struggled early on in the year. He found a bit of form last week at the Astana Open where he reached the Quarter-Finals, and has repeated the feat here in Sofia, defeating his countryman Laslo Djere in the Round of 16 for the loss of only three games. That dominant display was a bit surprising given his recent struggles, but he will be hoping to build off the momentum that he has built here. He is capable of some high-class tennis, and when he is fully focused he can be a real handful on any surface. Krajinovic is the massive favorite here against Kamil Majchrzak and is expected to win comfortably here and move on.
Kamil Majchrzak is ranked #125 on the ATP Tour and entered the 2021 Sofia Open via the Qualifying Rounds as a lucky loser. While he has not faced any opponents that are highly ranked, he has still played three matches in a row and is clearly in good form and well adjusted to the surface here. His next opponent Filip Krajinovic will be by far his biggest test, and he will have to play the match of his life to defeat a player that is ranked almost 100 spots above him. The Pole has a big serve and forehand, tricky prospects on this quick courts and seems to be quite strong mentally and tactically. Despite not having much ATP level experience, he is a very accomplished player on the Challenger Tour and is not likely to be feeling the pressure here despite it being his first Quarter-Final. He is the big underdog here but will be dreaming of a win since his opponent has been quite inconsistent lately.
This is the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour and I am expecting an interesting match despite the big difference in ranking and quality between the two players. Filip Krajinovic is the huge favorite and will win here, but it will be a lot closer than many expect. He has not been at his best for the better part of the year, and Kamil Majchrzak is playing freely and without pressure after getting a “free pass” as a lucky loser. Krajinovic will likely start slowly and I wouldn’t be surprised to see his opponent sneak a set, but the quality will shine through eventually, and he will win, advancing to the Semi-Finals here at the 2021 Sofia Open.
