TennisSection previews the 2021 Laver Cup as Daniil Medvedev takes on Diego Schwartzman on Day 3 on Sunday, September 26th, 2021.
Will Diego Schwartzman shock us all as he aims to beat one of the best returners in these conditions and get 3 points for Team World? Will Daniil Medvedev continue to dominate on the ATP Tour as he aims to win another match? Both players are great returners and we are in for a great match, but only one will get the points for their team. Who will it be?
Diego Schwartzman will be looking to bounce back from that extremely tight loss in his opening match here at the 2021 Laver Cup, where he lost to Andrey Rublev in 3 sets 6-4/4-6/9-11. The match was so tight and Diego was returning at an amazing level. However, Diego now meets another great Russian player in Daniil Medvedev and he will be working hard to ensure that both his serve and return is at its best. As we are on indoor hard courts, it will be harder for Diego as his serve is less effective, and Medvedev’s game is even better in these conditions.
Daniil Medvedev absolutely dominated in his only match here at the 2021 Laver Cup, beating Denis Shapovalov in straight sets 6-4/6-0. Medvedev has not lost any of the momentum he built in New York and he will know that he does not want to give up any of it as he goes on for the rest of the season, even if Team Europe might have already wrapped up the tournament before this match. Medvedev’s serve fires greatly in these conditions, and even when the ball is returned, he is so good in his return game and seems like he cannot miss a ball at times. Medvedev will know it still won’t be an easy challenge as he now meets a great returner in Diego Schwartzman.
Daniil Medvedev and Diego Schwartzman have met 6 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 6-0. They met earlier this year at the ATP Cup where Medvedev won in straight sets. Medvedev has only ever lost 1 set to Diego, and he has dominated all encounters really. Although Diego is a great player who can return amazingly against anyone, he is still nowhere near the level to be able to compete at a great level against Daniil Medvedev in indoor hard courts. The ball and movement of Medvedev will be too fast and accurate for Diego, and I expect an easy win here at the 2021 Laver Cup for the Russian.
