TennisSection previews the 2021 Laver Cup as Alexander Zverev takes on John Isner on Day 2 on Saturday, September 25th, 2021.
Will John Isner show us the same level of tennis which he did in 2019 when he was able to beat Alexander Zverev at the Laver Cup? Will Alexander Zverev come out and show us all how much he has improved since then as he is now even more accomplished on the ATP Tour? Both players can win this match and know each other quite well, but only one will come out with the two points for their team. Who will it be?
John Isner will be looking to give his fellow American crowd something to cheer about as Team World has not been getting all the results they wanted in the first day. John will know that he is one of, if not the, best server of all time, and he will come out here knowing that his serve will need to be firing as he meets a great returner in the German, Alexander Zverev. John Isner is a great player, but he will know that if his serve is not firing, he will struggle to get the return in because of the speed of the ball and his somewhat lack of movement at times. It will be a tough day at the office here at the 2021 Laver Cup.
Alexander Zverev will come into his 4th Laver Cup knowing that he is one of the most in form players in the world, hoping to show everyone that he has been the key player in the last 2 editions of the Laver Cup to get the win for Team Europe. Zverev has had an amazing summer, winning the Gold Medal in Tokyo, making the Semi-Finals of the US Open where he took Djokovic to 5 sets. Alexander Zverev has both a huge serve, which he has been able to get under control, and he has an amazing return game, which allows him to play to the weaknesses of his opponents, whether that be their return game, or their poor serve. With his opponent, John Isner, Zverev will have to be at his best on the return.
Alexander Zverev and John Isner have met 8 times before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 6-2. They last met at the 2019 Laver Cup where Isner won in 3 sets. Although Isner won that, Zverev was struggling a lot with his serve back then, and now in 2021 he has gotten it under control and is not afraid of going big anymore. I expect a tight match at moments, but I see Zverev getting the match win in 2 sets here because when you compare their serves, they’re quite similar, but when you compare their return games, Isner’s is very poor compared to Zverev.
