Astana Open 2021: Ilya Ivashka vs. James Duckworth Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Astana Open as Ilya Ivashka (8) faces James Duckworth in the Semi-Finals on Saturday September 25th, 2021.

A very surprising Semi-Final is upon us here at the 2021 Astana Open as eighth seeded Belarusian Ilya Ivashka does battle with James Duckworth of Australia for a spot in Sunday’s Final. Ivashka has been one of the most improved players on the ATP Tour and should be considered the favorite here, however Duckworth has played some fantastic tennis and has upset much higher ranked players this week. A close match seems very likely, who will get the win and advance to the Final here at the 2021 Astana Open?

Ilya Ivashka is the eighth seed here at the 2021 Astana Open and is currently ranked #52 on the ATP Tour. The Belarusian has been outstanding this season and has to be in the running for the most improved player award. He won his first ATP title at the Winston-Salem Open a few weeks ago and will be hugely motivated to win his second here in Kazakhstan. He has carried that form into the tournament here in Astana, defeating Elias Ymer and Timofey Skatov without dropping a set in his first two matches, but was then pushed to the limit by Emil Ruusuvuori, dropping the first set before fighting back to win in three. Ivashka has served very well this week but has been particularly impressive from the baseline, playing aggressive tennis and dominating his opponents. In this type of form he must be considered the favorite here but would be wise to not underestimate his opponent James Duckworth, who despite his poor season so far has been very impressive this week.

James Duckworth is unseeded here at the 2021 Astana Open and is currently ranked #65 in the world rankings. The Aussie has been having a relatively poor season, with his only recent notable performance was a run to the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open as a Qualifier. He entered this event in very poor form, losing three consecutive matches and not much was expected of him here. However, he found form at the perfect time, upsetting both world number 37 Filip Krajinovic and defending champion John Millman in consecutive matches to reach his first Semi-Final of the year. While he is ranked slightly lower than his opponent Ilya Ivashka and is considered the underdog, he is playing some unbelievable tennis at the moment and should not be discounted here.

This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I am expecting a very close match. Ivashka has been in better form lately, but all that matters is how they are playing at the moment and both men have been outstanding in Astana. I do think that this match will go the distance, but I am backing The Belarusian here. James Duckworth is a solid player but lacks the weapons to truly do damage to his opponent and will be relying on him to make errors here. Ivashka has more upside than the Aussie, and his game is better suited to these quick indoor courts. It won’t be easy, but Ilya Ivashka will win here, advancing to the Final of the 2021 Astana Open.
