TennisSection previews the 2021 Astana Open as John Millman (5) takes on Jaume Munar in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021.
Will John Millman move on? Will Jaume Munar cause the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we will see if one of the veterans of the ATP Tour can move through and show he’s still got it. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Astana Open?
John Millman got through in a tight 3 sets, and despite that, I still put him as the clear favorite to win the match, he has way more experience and a higher ranking to show for it, especially on hard courts, where Jaume Munar is not particularly well-suited. I feel like Millman will be able to dictate the flow of a lot of the points using his flatter and more penetrating groundstrokes, which will be more effective than Munar’s on hard courts. While Munar did get through in straights, his opponent was not as in form as others, and Millman already had a test early on, so I am very confident that he will learn from he did well and adapt to Munar’s game very well to take him out and head through to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Astana Open, even if he has a little bit of turbulence.
Jaume Munar got a nice win, winning in two sets, but his opponent was not playing too well, and Munar didn’t really face any tests to have to come up against someone like John Millman, who is the 5th seed here in Astana and is much more experienced on hard courts. Munar will need to incorporate more aggressive elements into his game, and avoid getting into too many long rallies, because even if he can be more consistent, Millman will definitely play the big moments better and he will for sure know when to play aggressive and throw off Munar to clutch out those important moments. Munar can still definitely push Millman, especially since he hasn’t been playing too well lately, but ultimately, I think his time here at the 2021 Astana Open will be over after facing Millman.
John Millman and Jaume Munar have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. While Millman had some struggles in the first round, he still got the win and I just feel as if he’ll be able to use his experience and his higher ranking to his advantage to pull out the win. Munar will try to grind a lot from the baseline, as he primarily likes to play on clay, and he will try to draw many unforced errors, but Millman has the experience to turn up the heat and play more aggressive and go for his shots in the important moments especially, he’s just way more well-versed on hard courts, so I feel like he’ll be able to get the win and move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Astana Open.
