TennisSection previews the 2021 Moselle Open as Ugo Humbert (6) faces Andy Murray in the First Round on Tuesday, September 21st, 2021.
Yet another fantastic matchup will be on display here at the 2021 Moselle Open as sixth seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert faces former world number one Andy Murray in the First Round. While this is an ATP 250 event the field is full of quality and this match is no exception. Murray has had a very tough time over the past few years with injuries but is showing signs of returning to his best lately, and will be eager to put in a good performance here in Metz. Can he cause the upset over hometown favorite Humbert?
Ugo Humbert is currently ranked #26 on the ATP Tour and is the sixth seed here at the 2021 Moselle Open. The 23 year old Frenchman has established himself as one of the most promising young players in the world over the past few years with a number of strong performances. He has been plagued by inconsistency this season, notably winning the biggest title of his career in Halle and reaching the Quarter-Finals at the Olympics (defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas) but has since gone on a three match losing streak. Humbert will be hoping to steady the ship and get back to winning ways here on home soil, but has been dealt a tricky draw here and will face former world number one Andy Murray. While Humbert should be considered the big favorite, he should be wary of his opponent who has shown flashes of his former self lately and his experience should certainly not be overlooked.
Andy Murray is a former Grand Slam champion and world number one who currently finds himself ranked outside the top 100 at #113 due to numerous injuries and loss of form over the past few years. At one point it seemed like his career was over, but sheer determination has allowed him to play again and while his results have not been great, he is slowly beginning to regain his form. He will have been delighted at his performance at the US Open where he stretched world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas to five sets but failed to replicate that last week where he shockingly lost in the Second Round in a Rennes Challenger to Roman Safiullin. One has to wonder if he has sustained an injury or has some fitness concerns, but even at full strength here he is the big underdog against Ugo Humbert and it will take a massive effort for the Brit to get the win here at the 2021 Moselle Open.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Andy Murray winning their only meeting back in 2019. Murray is one of the best players in history and is highly experienced, but there is no denying that he is no longer the player that he once was, and his physicality and fitness which were some of his main strengths have serious waned over the past few years. He is still a tremendous fighter and I expect him to give it his all, but he is no match for the Frenchman Ugo Humbert and I expect that to show here. Humbert is simply too good at this point in their careers and I think that this will be a straight sets win for him here at home. Murray won’t go down without a fight, but if his recent form is anything to go by he will go down here, as the Frenchman advances to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Moselle Open.
