TennisSection previews the 2021 Moselle Open as Alejandro Davidovich Fokina faces Gilles Simon in the First Round on Tuesday September 21st, 2021.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is considered one of the most talented young players on the ATP Tour but he has been in dreadful form lately. He will attempt to turn his fortunes around here at the 2021 Moselle Open but has been drawn against a difficult opponent in the experienced Frenchman Gilles Simon. While Simon is not the player he once was he is still capable of some solid tennis and is not the type of opponent you would like to face when in poor form. Can he upset the highly-rated Spaniard here on home soil in Metz?
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is currently ranked #45 on the ATP Tour and is unseeded here at the 2021 Moselle Open. The young Spaniard is a very talented player but can be streaky at times, as evidenced by his current four match losing streak. He has a very dynamic game and can struggle with shot selection at times, which is usually his downfall. There is no denying his quality however, and on a good day when he is fully focused he can be a handful for even the world’s best. His last Tour match was a surprising five set loss to Marco Trungelliti in the First Round of the US Open and he will be very eager to get back on track. Davidovich Fokina’s next opponent is the veteran Frenchman Gilles Simon who is ultra consistent and one of the most experienced players out there. While he cannot match the Spaniard on power and movement, he is not the type of player that ADF will be relishing playing when not at 100% and this could be a struggle here.
Gilles Simon is a former top five player that currently finds himself ranked at #99 in the world after seeing his game decline over the past few seasons. Now approaching the twilight of his career he is still a solid player and is not someone to underestimate with his vast experience. His game was never overly reliant on power anyway so he has not suffered too much in that regard, but his loss of movement has been the biggest issue. He is still a good ball striker and tactically very strong, so he can certainly cause his opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina some issues with his consistency and shot selection. While he enters this match as the big underdog, his opponent’s confidence will be low and the French crowd will be behind Simon, setting the stage for a potential tough match here at the 2021 Moselle Open.
This will be the first match between the two players on the ATP Tour, and despite the big gap in the rankings I am expecting a close match. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is the much stronger player at this stage in their careers but he has been in poor form lately and his confidence may be low. Gilles Simon is still a decent player and his solid baseline play is likely to cause the young Spaniard some problems until he gets himself together. I am still expecting Davidovich Fokina to come away with the win here in a close match, and that will do him the world of good as he attempts to make a deep run here at the 2021 Moselle Open.
