Will Jordan Thompson be able to cause a big upset against the defending champion here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters? Will Fabio Fognini continue to put on solid performances here in Monte-Carlo as we saw in his first round encounter against Miomir Kecmanovic? Both players put on good performances in the first round, but only one will make their way to the Third Round. Who will it be?
Jordan Thompson came through a very tight 3-set encounter against Benoit Paire in the First Round, beating the Frenchman 6-4/(3)6-7/7-6(5). This match was as tight as it could get, but Thompson was able to stick it out to the point where Benoit Paire was just not there physically and mentally anymore. Thompson is one of the most underrated Australians out there on the ATP Tour, but looking at performances like that should get you to be more and more familiar with his name. Thompson will be happy with that match, but he will also be wary that he now meets an even tougher opponent in the defending champion which is Fabio Fognini. Can Thompson make his way to the Third Round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters?
Fabio Fognini put on a superb performance in his First Round match against Miomir Kecmanovic, cruising through both sets really, even though he went a break down in both. Fognini showed us in his 6-2/7-5 victory that although he might be on the back foot sometimes, when he actually decides to play and raise his level, it is very hard to keep up with him. Fognini just loves to hit winners on both sides of the court and he did just that on Tuesday. Fabio will be very determined to come out here again and make his mark on the Monte-Carlo Masters, just as he did in 2019 when he beat the likes of Zverev, Rublev, and Nadal to make his way to the Final and win the title. Fabio Fognini will be excited, but he also knows that if he doesn’t give it all he can lose Jordan Thompson.
Fabio Fognini and Jordan Thompson have met once before, with Fabio Fognini leading the head to head 1-0. The only time they met was in the Second Round of the 2020 Australian Open where they went down to the wire in a 5 set match ending in a tiebreak where Fognini won 10-4. Fognini was cruising through that match, leading 2-0 sets, but he let his guard down and allowed Thompson in the match. Fabio Fognini will remember this and make sure he does not let this happen again here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters. I expect the defending champion to continue cruising.
