TennisSection previews the 2021 Vienna Open as Jannik Sinner takes on Frances Tiafoe in the Semi-Finals on Saturday, October 30th, 2021.
Will Frances Tiafoe continue to play at an incredibly high level and get himself into what would be the biggest Final on the ATP Tour of his career? Will Jannik Sinner continue to cruise through matches as he aims to get into his back-to-back Finals and get one of the biggest titles of his career under his belt? Both players will put on a show for the fans, but only one will make their way to the Final of the 2021 Vienna Open. Who will it be?
Frances Tiafoe thought his way through an entertaining match against the in form Diego Schwartzman, beating the Argentine in straight sets 6-4/7-6. Frances started the match in great form, leading a set and a break up in the second set. However, as we often see from the American against big players, he lost concentration and Diego broke back. This made the match very tight in the second set, and Frances had to pull off some amazing shots to get the win in the tiebreak at 8-6. Frances will be happy with this win, but he knows he cannot afford to make a mistake like that again as he now meets the very in form Jannik Sinner here at the 2021 Vienna Open.
Jannik Sinner cruised through his Quarter-Final match against the always tough Casper Ruud, beating the Norwegian in straight sets 7-5/6-1. This is now 20 sets in a row that Jannik has won in indoor hard court conditions and he will be very determined to make it 22 here as he aims to get into the Final at the 2021 Vienna Open. Jannik will know that he has won 2 of the 3 last tournaments he has played in, and he will want to win here in Vienna as this would be one of the biggest titles of his career, and it would put him tied at the top of the list for most titles in 2021. Jannik can do it, but he needs to ensure he does not waste too much time in beating Frances Tiafoe.
Jannik Sinner and Frances Tiafoe have met 2 times before, with Jannik Sinner leading the head to head 2-0. They met both times in indoor hard courts in 2021, and Jannik came through in tight matches. Since then, Jannik has skyrocketed in the ATP Tour, whilst Frances has been a bit sub-par but has shown some form in the last couple of months. Jannik Sinner has won 4 titles this year, and he is 10th in the race to Turin (11th in the ATP Tour rankings). This match means more to the Italian because he is very determined to get the necessary points to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin, so I think he will put on a superb performance here at the 2021 Vienna Open.
