TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Novak Djokovic takes on Daniil Medvedev in the Final on Sunday, September 12th, 2021.
A rematch of the 2021 Australian Open Final is here as both players aim to get the 2021 US Open title under their belt. Will it be Daniil Medvedev finally getting his maiden Grand Slam title in his 3rd Final? Will it be Novak Djokovic to get his record-breaking (in the Men’s Singles) 21st Grand Slam title as he also aims to complete the calendar Grand Slam? We are going to witness the two best returners in the game, and two best hard court players compete here at the 2021 US Open, but only one will be crowned as champion. Who will it be?
Daniil Medvedev has been incredible over the last 2 weeks, destroying all of his opponents, and only losing one set along the way. Medvedev’s game has been on top, being able to hit his serves very fast and accurately, and then being able to play freely on the return game and he is one of the best returners out there. Medvedev destroyed the always tough Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Semi-Finals in straight sets 6-4/7-5/6-2. This win was a statement for Daniil Medvedev as he did not want to play around and let anything be decided by chance. Medvedev made sure to get the win and get himself into the Final here of the 2021 US Open, and he will now have to raise his level even more as he meets the heavy favourite, Novak Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic showed us amazing resilience in his Semi-Final match against Alexander Zverev who has been his biggest threat in this side of the draw, beating the German in 5 sets 4-6/6-2/6-4/4-6/6-2. Djokovic was shown that there are weaknesses in his game, especially off of his forehand side. However, Djokovic was not afraid of getting tucked in the long rallies, even rallies over 50 shots, as he showed us why he is probably the best of all time. Novak will be happy that he won, but he know he meets an even tougher opponent now in Daniil Medvedev here at the 2021 US Open, and he will have to be ready for a very physical battle if he is to achieve his dream 21st Grand Slam and a history making calendar Grand Slam.
Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev have met 8 times before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 5-3. They always play incredible matches against each other, and they recently met early this year in the Final of the Australian Open. In that match, Djokovic dominated in 3 sets. This was an easy win for Djokovic because I believe Medvedev underestimated the task of beating Djokovic in Australia. Here in New York, based on the tennis we have seen Medvedev play all throughout the North American hard court season, I think he stands a chance of keeping things very close. Medvedev has now had 2 Grand Slam Finals for experience, so he will not be as nervous. However, at the end of the day, what Novak showed against a very in form Zverev was just out of this world, and it is hard to go against him after that performance. I don’t expect an easy win, but I expect for a great win as history is made by Novak Djokovic here at the 2021 US Open.
