TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Alexander Zverev takes on Lloyd Harris in the Quarter-Finals on Wednesday, September 8th, 2021.
Will Lloyd Harris get his 4th Top 10 win of the year as he aims to get some more big wins under his belt? Will Alexander Zverev continue to shine here in New York and get himself one win closer to getting back to the US Open Final? Both players are big hitters and can take control of rallies, but only one will make their way to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 US Open. Who will it be?
Lloyd Harris fought back from a set down against the in form American, Reilly Opelka, beating him in 4 sets 6-7/6-4/6-1/6-3. Lloyd Harris has shown us all week that he is someone who should not be underestimated, especially in these hard court conditions because he has a huge serve which kicks high and he also has great power and speed on his forehand. Lloyd has beaten 3 Top 10 players this year, and he will know he has the game to get some more names in that list. However, if he is to do it here at the 2021 US Open, he is going to have to beat the extremely in form Alexander Zverev.
Alexander Zverev put on a great performance in the Round of 16, beating the always tough and in form Jannik Sinner in straight sets 6-4/6-4/7-6. Alexander was cruising throughout the first 2 sets, but then in the third set, Jannik brought the fight to Alexander. Jannik was playing out of this world, having 5 set points along the way. However, when Zverev’s back was against the wall, he brought out his best both on his serve and on his backhand. Zverev made sure to keep things tight and in the end, he was able to get the win in straight sets. This is a big win for Zverev as he showed he can come through even when under the most pressure. This will give the German a lot of confidence here at the 2021 US Open, especially as he meets the in form Lloyd Harris.
Alexander Zverev and Lloyd Harris have met 2 times before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 2-0. They met a few weeks ago in Cincinnati where Zverev won easily in straight sets. Zverev will use that match as a strong baseline and build confidence coming into this match. However, Lloyd Harris has been in much better form over the last week. Lloyd will try and keep things tight, and he will aim to finish points off quickly. I expect some tight sets. However, when we compare who has the best game, it has to be Zverev. Lloyd is a big hitter, but he is not a long-rally hitter, aiming to finish points quickly. Zverev has both the power and the stamina to play extremely long matches, and I think he will wear down the South African with some ease as he makes his way to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 US Open.
