TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime takes on Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 16 on Sunday, September 5th, 2021.
Who will come out on top of this incredible entertaining match-up between two power hitting and flamboyant players? Will it be the more experienced but lower ranked Frances Tiafoe to get another huge win under his belt? Will it be Felix Auger-Aliassime to get himself into week 2 of the 2021 US Open? Both players have shown that they can win this match based on their prior matches here, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open. Who will it be?
Frances Tiafoe put on an amazing performance in the Round of 32, beating the extremely tough to beat and No.5 seed, Andrey Rublev, in a 5-set thriller 4-6/6-3/7-6/4-6/6-1. Frances is definitely showing us why he is so beloved by tennis fans, and it is because he has an amazing game. Tiafoe in his last two Grand Slams has beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas and now Andrey Rublev, which shows that he is on the right path to get back to his best where we all expected him to be a few years ago. The American has so much raw power and is so quick around the court, but can he beat a similar opponent in Felix Auger-Aliassime here at the 2021 US Open?
Felix Auger-Aliassime also came through a 5-set thriller in the Round of 32, beating the extremely tough and experienced Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3/6-4/4-6/3-6/6-3. This match looked as if it was done when Felix took the first two sets, but you can never underestimate Roberto Bautista Agut who can beat anyone on the ATP Tour in my opinion. Robert thought back to take it to a fight set, but Felix Auger-Aliassime showed us some amazing composure, something which he had not done in a month or so. Felix will know he needs to ensure that if he gets another 2-0 sets lead, he cannot afford to let an opponent back into the match here at the 2021 US Open, especially against the likes of Frances Tiafoe.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Frances Tiafoe have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Frances is of course more experienced in terms of having 2 more years on the ATP Tour and some more matches played. However, Felix is the much more successful out of the two. Felix is one of the future main stars of the game, especially as he is bein coached by Toni Nadal, whilst Frances was expected to be a main star, but in recent years he has fallen down to 50th in the world. I do expect a tight encounter however between the two as they are both powerhitting players, with big first serves and issues on their second serve. I expect both of them to be riding high in confidence from their prior wins, but Felix has a better serve, and I trust Felix’s forehand more than Frances at the end of the day.
