TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Daniil Medvedev (2) faces Dan Evans (24) in the Round of 16 on Sunday September 5th, 2021.
Daniil Medvedev has been mowing through the field here at the 2021 US Open and has simply been dominant thus far. He is yet to lose a set and has his eyes firmly fixed on capturing his maiden Grand Slam title here in New York. Next up in his path is the tricky Brit Dan Evans who has been having a fine tournament in his own right. Can he pull off the biggest win of his career and stun the world number two?
Daniil Medvedev is the second seed here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #2 on the ATP Tour. The Russian superstar has built some serious momentum heading into this event by winning the title at the Roger Cup and reached the Semis in Cincinnati. His all-court game is perfectly suited to the courts here in New York and he has simply been dominant so far, defeating Richard Gasquet, Dominik Koepfer and Pablo Andujar all in straight sets. In fact, he has not lost more than 8 games in any of those matches, showing the absolute dominance that he has had over his opponents. If this continues he will reach the second week in fantastic form and extremely well rested, a very dangerous combination for the rest of the field. He is the massive favorite here against Dan Evans in the Round of 16 but this will be the toughest opponent that he has faced so far.
Dan Evans is the 24th seed here at the US Open and has been having a very solid season so far, finding himself ranked at a career-high #27. The Brit has a very unique game and his ability to mix things up, use the slice and a lot of variety can make him a very tricky opponent. He has had a very tough path to the Round of 16, losing at least a set in each of his three matches so far but has found a way to win which is always the most important thing. Evans was pushed to the brink in the Third Round by Alexei Popyrin, coming back from two sets to love down to stun the young Aussie. His next opponent is by far the biggest test that he has faced so far however, as he will face Daniil Medvedev for a spot in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 US Open. Evans is the huge underdog here against the Russian star who is playing at an incredible level and will have to put forward a career-best performance to have any sort of chance here.
This is the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour and only one outcome is possible here, and that is a comprehensive win for Daniil Medvedev. Dan Evans is a very good player who is having a great season, but the Russian is simply on another planet right now and has been crushing everyone in his path. He seems fully focused and locked in, and is playing better tennis than anyone at the moment. I expect Evans to fight valiantly but he will ultimately lose here in straight sets, with Medvedev advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 US Open.
