TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Paula Badosa takes on Varvara Gracheva in the Round of 64 on Thursday, September 2nd, 2021.
Will Paula Badosa go through? Will Varvara Gracheva pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we definitely have a potential dark horse this tournament in action once again. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 US Open?
Paula Badosa got a solid win in her first round match, taking out her opponent 6-4 6-3. She served quite well, mostly just being able to stay consistent and get the win rather easily. She has a fantastic opportunity here to move into the Round of 32 at the 2021 US Open, where she will play Varvara Gracheva to try and get there. Being the twenty-fourth seed, she is coming up against someone she is not only familiar against, but also someone ranked much lower than her who only got through in three sets. I definitely like her chances, at her best level, she can be quite dangerous and is definitely a dark horse who could make a deep run in this tournament.
Varvara Gracheva played a match with an interesting scoreline to set up a meeting with Paula Badosa to fight for a spot in the Round of 32 at the 2021 US Open. After dropping the first set, she took the next two sets 6-0 6-2. She definitely stepped up her level, showing some great mental resolve. Still, her opponent was not at her best, and she still needed three sets against an opponent who is at a much lower level than Badosa will be. She will definitely need to serve better in my eyes, as Badosa is returning well and Gracheva did not serve at her best in her first round match, mostly winning service games due to her opponents’ less than adequate play. This definitely isn’t the most one-sided match up in the draw, however, Badosa is definitely the heavy favorite here to get an easy win and move on to the next round at the 2021 US Open.
Paula Badosa and Varvara Gracheva have met twice before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Their first meeting was actually at the last edition of the US Open, with Gracheva taking that one in two tight sets. Badosa, however, took their most recent one in three tough sets this year, and rather recently too. Badosa will definitely know how to play her, and just taking a look at their current forms, it’s a safe bet to say Badosa will take this one in a rather straightforward manner, however, it is definitely possible that the match can go three sets, especially if Gracheva is playing really well, however, I foresee that Badosa can make a show of strength and get through the match no matter the circumstances.
