TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Naomi Osaka (3) meets Olga Danilovic in the Second Round on Wednesday September 1st, 2021.
Can Naomi Osaka re-discover her world-beating form as she seeks to defend her US Open title? The Japanese superstar won the Australian Open in January but otherwise her season has been a disaster by her high standards. Can she make the necessary changes to steady the ship and get her season back on track? Or will the young Olga Danilovic play spoiler and cause one of the biggest shocks in Grand Slam history?
Naomi Osaka is currently ranked #3 in the world and is the third seed here at the 2021 US Open. She is a former world number one and is the reigning champion here in New York. However, a lot of things have to change if she is to even think about defending her title, as she has been in terrible form lately. Through no fault of her own she has been immense pressure on and off the courts and will need to somehow block that out and focus on the tennis which is no easy feat. Her preparation for this event was not ideal as she lost in the Second Round in Cincinnati and her confidence must be low. She started strongly though, and displayed her grit in defeating the talented Marie Bouzkova 6-4, 6-1 in a dominant performance. If she is at her best there are very few that can stop her, and if she is able to gain some traction she could be a top contender here. Osaka is the overwhelming favorite here against Olga Danilovic and is expected to cruise to victory here.
Olga Danilovic is currently ranked #145 in the world and entered the 2021 US Open via the Qualifying Rounds. The young Serbian is very talented but lacks the necessary experience to be able to compete with the world’s best. She made the most of her good First Round draw by defeating Alycia Parks of the USA in a solid straight-sets victory. The lefty has a tricky game and her groundstrokes are solid, but she lacks the power to be able to trouble the defending champion Naomi Osaka. This is the biggest match of her life by far, and she will have to be at her absolute best if she is to not get blown off the court here. She enters this match as the massive underdog, but getting to play on this big stage will do her the world of good and is a great learning experience.
This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour and I am expecting a very short match. Olga Danilovic is a talented young player and is certainly one for the future, but she is no match for the defending champion. The Serb will struggle mightily with the Japanese star’s firepower, and this match should be filled with winners on either wing. Naomi Osaka looked like her former dominant self towards the end of her First Round match, and seems primed for a deep run here in New York. She will win easily here, advancing to the Third Round of the 2021 US Open.
