TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Diego Schwartzman (11) meets Kevin Anderson in the Second Round on Wednesday September 1st, 2021.
A potential blockbuster is on our hands as eleventh seeded Diego Schwartzman of Argentina does battle with former Runner-Up Kevin Anderson at the 2021 US Open. The two men have very different game styles and it will be very interesting to see what happens here. Can Schwartzman withstand the barrage of aces that are surely coming his way? Does Anderson have anything left in the tank after his epic five setter in the First Round? Only time will tell, who will get the win and advance to the Third Round here in New York?
Diego Schwartzman is the eleventh seed here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #14 on the ATP Tour. The Argentine star is small in stature but makes up for it with his huge heart and fighting spirit. He is one of the fiercest competitors on the Tour, and has become a very well-rounded player, difficult to beat on most surfaces. He was impressive in his First Round win over Ricardas Berankis, but is in for a whole different type of opponent in Kevin Anderson. Schwartzman will have to be at his absolute best to get past the South African veteran, who has one of the biggest serves in the business. Due to his higher ranking and superior fitness the Argentina should be considered the slight favorite, but he will certainly be in for a battle here at the 2021 US Open.
Kevin Anderson is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #77 on the ATP Tour. The big-serving South African is highly experienced, and has had a lot of success here, having reached the Final here in New York in 2017. He has struggled mightily with injuries and loss of form over the past few seasons, and saw his ranking plummet as a result. It was a long and tough journey back but he seems to be almost fully fit now, which really is a treat for tennis fans. He was surprisingly pushed to five sets in the First Round by Jiri Vesely, and now there are serious questions about his fitness and if he has anything left in the tank. If he was completely fresh then he would stand a serious chance of causing the upset here over Diego Schwartzman, but now it is a waiting game at the 2021 US Open.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Kevin Anderson leading the head to head 2-1. This is a tough match to call, due to the different styles of the players and the uncertainty of Anderson’s health. If we knew that the South African was fully fit I would likely pick him to win as Diego Schwartzman has generally struggled on the hard courts this season. However, it is very likely that fatigue will be a major factor here after those five sets, and it is highly unlikely that he will be able to keep up with one of the fittest players on the tour in Schwartzman. His serve will keep it competitive and it will surely be close, but I am picking Diego Schwartzman to win here, in four or five close sets, advancing to the Third Round here at the 2021 US Open.
