TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Andrey Rublev (5) meets Pedro Martinez in the Second Round on Wednesday September 1st, 2021.
Andrey Rublev is one of the favorites for the title here at the 2021 US Open and the aggressive Russian has looked good lately. Next up in his path is the unseeded Spaniard Pedro Martinez who will be feeling some fatigue after his five setter in the First Round. Does Martinez have enough gas left in the tank to make this match competitive? Or will the Russian star get the easy win as expected and advance to the Third Round?
Andrey Rublev is currently ranked #7 in the world and is the fifth seed here at the 2021 US Open. The ultra-aggressive Russian has been in good form lately, and established himself as an outside contender to lift the trophy here in New York. Rublev was given a potentially tricky First Round match against the huge serving Ivo Karlovic but passed that test with flying colours, coming away with the 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory. What makes the win even more impressive was the fact that only one of the sets went to a tiebreak, and he will have been pleased with his return game as he has been known to struggle against big servers. Once he is full of confidence like he is now he is an extremely difficult player to beat and with the draw that he has been handed, looks a good shout to get through his quarter. He is the big favorite here in the Second Round against Pedro Martinez and will be backing himself to get another straight-sets win under his belt.
Pedro Martinez is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #75 on the ATP Tour. He has had some strong performances this year, most notably reaching the Final at the Austrian Open where he lost to Casper Ruud. The Spaniard had a rough match in the opening round, needing five sets to overcome Australia’s James Duckworth. In a shocking turn of events, Martinez fought back from two sets to love down, saving five match points in the process. He will be looking to make the most of his good fortune, but he is coming up against one of the best players in the world next in Andrey Rublev, in a match where he is the massive underdog. Even if fatigue is not a factor he will likely to struggle with his opponent’s big hitting, and will need to play the match of his life to have any chance here.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and it should be over relatively quickly. Andrey Rublev is the much better player here, and the fact that he is much more well-rested than his opponent Pedro Martinez is an even bigger indicator of how this match will go. Martinez is a solid player but is simply no match for the Russian star here, and is not likely to put up much resistance, especially after his five set marathon yesterday. I expect a dominant performance from Andrey Rublev, who will advance to the Third Round here at the 2021 US Open.
