TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Alex de Minaur takes on Taylor Fritz in the First Round on Tuesday August 31st, 2021.
Will Alex de Minaur go through? Will Taylor Fritz pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see two of the most talented youngsters on the ATP Tour going head to head. Who will move on to the Second Round here at the 2021 US Open?
Alex de Minaur hasn’t had quite the year that he would have hoped for, losing in the early stages of his last few tournaments but this is a grand slam and he can definitely recuperate and start to find his best stuff again. He has the challenge of Taylor Fritz ahead of him, which would be scarier had Fritz not also been performing rather poorly lately, currently on a three match losing streak. de Minaur has a great look at taking him out here and moving on, as in my eyes de Minaur has been playing just a little bit better than Fritz lately, even though they’ve both been less than normal, de Minaur also has more experience and a higher ranking to show for it, still though, it could get interesting even if de Minaur is the favorite to take it to move on to the next round at the 2021 US Open.
Taylor Fritz has had an alright year, playing quite well at Wimbledon after undergoing knee surgery, although he definitely hasn’t been playing as well as he would like to have been after that, as I’ve already mentioned he’s currently on a 3 match losing streak. He has to deal with Alex de Minaur, the fourteenth seed and someone who’s had some grand slam success before, it will definitely be quite difficult. I don’t think he’ll want to try to play too aggressively, as de Minaur defends very well and Fritz just isn’t playing that kind of tennis to take those sort of risks. So, I think he’ll have to try and grind with some big balls down the center of the court, and hope de Minaur makes many errors to try and challenge him for a spot in the Second Round here at the 2021 US Open.
Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz have met three times before, with Alex de Minaur leading the head to head 3-0. He certainly has the number on his fellow next-gen star, winning all three of their meetings, they all came in 2019, but that is still rather recent and isn’t too poor of a reflection of their current forms. While Fritz has a chance to win, as de Minaur is definitely unpredictable right now, I just think de Minaur will make less unforced errors and defend pretty well all things considered, so it’s definitely a safer bet to go with a win for de Minaur, while there will definitely be some challenges, I feel like he’ll come through in a relatively straightforward manner, let’s see if he can step up his level for the 2021 US Open.
